The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines qualification provides hands-on introduction to the world of wine. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately, and make food and wine pairings. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET digital certificate and badge.
The Walla Walla Valley Wine Academy operates as a satellite location of The Center for Wine Education at Linfield University. When you register for the WSET Level 1 course, you will be directed to Linfield University’s website to complete your enrollment and payment. Once registered, Linfield will provide all necessary textbooks and course materials, along with instructions for creating an account with WSET.
All in-person classes are held at the Walla Walla Valley Wine Academy, located at 212 E Alder Street in Walla Walla. Additional course details including registration confirmation, course information and other student administration details will be provided to students by Linfield University.

The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is perfect for those curious about wine. Whether you're an enthusiast seeking a fun, hands-on introduction or a newcomer to the hospitality and beverage industry aiming for a solid foundation and globally recognized certification, this course offers an engaging entry point into the world of wine.
Assessment and Certification
The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is assessed by a closed-book examination that consists of 30 multiple choice questions, to be completed in 45 minutes. A minimum mark of 70% is needed to obtain certification.
Are there pre-reqs for WSET 1?
There are no professional or educational prerequisites to participate in WSET 1.
Students must be 21 years of age at the date of enrollment.
How long is the course?
WSET Level 1 takes place over the course of 7 hours in a single day including a 1-hour break for lunch, and 45 minutes for assessment.
What will the course cover?
In this course, students will learn about the main types and styles of wine as well as the most common grapes and their characteristics. You will learn how to serve and store wine, along with the principles of food and wine pairing.You will also be introduced to the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine (SAT).
How much does WSET 1 cost?
Course Fee: $350
The course fee includes an online course book, nine distinct wine samples, all experiments and supplies, instruction by a WSET Certified Educator, exam and a digital certificate and badge upon completion.
